Youth is an important chapter of the MAB community and it shall be given a clear contribution to decision-making within MAB programme as coordinated through the OEWG (Open End Working Group for MAB Youth).
Jointly organized by UNESCO Beijing Office, Northeast Institute of Geography and Agroecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and MAB China, the First Regional Youth Forum for Asia and the Pacific for Man & Biosphere 2023 themed "Ecosystem Conservation and Food Security" was held in Jixi City, Heilongjiang Province, China, between 24 and 27 September 2023. The forum advocates for agriculture and food production in harmony with man and natural ecosystems and focuses on the role of Ecosystem Conservation in promoting sustainable development and addressing food security. It encourages young people to take the lead in research and actions in innovative and creative approaches to biodiversity protection and conservation for food security.
This regional edition of the Youth Forum underlined the need to further expand UNESCO’s youth networks’ involvement but also real empowerment, nationally, regionally and globally for enhancing tangible collaboration with young professional networks on climate change adaptation to convey the knowledge and experience of the young experts to both policy-makers and the community to build resilient societies.
The three major outputs of this regional MAB Youth Forum are the Xingkai Lake Declaration, the International Young Professional Network for Biodiversity Conservation and the Food Security; and Transboundary Ecosystem Conservation, Climate Change and Food Security Initiative (TEC3FSI).
